Queen's Diamond Jubilee

It's the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations this weekend. We have two days for a national holiday on Monday and Tuesday to celebrate. Slowly the bunting and the flags are coming out around the village. I've put a Union flag in the front window and will make my own bunting out of various red, white and blue fabrics today to fit the size of my windows which are relatively small. I've even gone to town to plant the small border at the front of the cottage with some cottage plants on a theme of red, white and blue, but unfortunately the blue and white Delphiniums are still only in bud, so it's just red/pinks at the moment.

Monday evening a beacon will be lit on top of the Green Hill as part of a nationwide chain of beacons and then on Tuesday we are having a village picnic with fun and games up on the Common Field rather than a street party.

View from half way up the Green Hill towards the village

I'll walk along the Jubilee Path, which I do at least once a year - this is a public footpath that runs along the bottom of my back garden, and all the gardens in the street. It was put there to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and runs along the edge of what would have been fields. The old metal railings along the path are still there today, however only half the length of the path borders a field, from the bottom of my garden and up.

I have never been able to find out why the path was there, but I wonder whether it is because it runs by the side of the old Schoolhouse and allowed access to the fields to play? By walking the footpath at least once a year we make sure that the path remains open and as I  go along, I usually cut down the stinging nettles that often overrhang the path edge.

I've been doing quite a bit of stitching this past four weeks, so more to come over the weekend.
